I don't think there's
much of anything sadder than a little bitty kid wearing glasses.
Perhaps I feel this way because I was one once of those "four-eyed"
little kids. I started wearing glasses when I was in second grade.
I was seven years old. My eyesight got progressively worse as
I got older, and by the time I was a teenager my glasses bore
a strong resemblance to pop-bottles. Not a fun thing for a teenage
girl trying to fit in. When I was 14 years old I made the switch
to contact lenses, and suddenly I felt like a normal, "two-eyed"
person. However, there was still the problem of night-time when
I had to take my contacts out and put the dreaded glasses back
on. When people would see me wearing my glasses, they would do
a double-take and say, "I didn't know you wore glasses!"
I would offer a wan smile and reply, "I usually wear contacts."
Dealing with corrective lenses and very poor vision was simply
my way of life for many years, until some brilliant person came
up with LASIK.
When
I first heard of the procedure, my mouth watered at the prospect
of being able to see without corrective lenses. However, I was
very nervous about having it done. I felt that since I had lived
most of my life dealing with contacts and glasses, I could go
on doing so. Okay, let me be honest. I was chicken. To make matters
worse, my husband (who is usually more of a chicken than I am)
decided he wanted to have LASIK performed to correct his vision.
I figured he could be the guinea pig and I'd see how things went.
I was able to watch his surgery, and my fears were completely
relieved. The procedure was simple, quick, and completely painless.
He was seeing 20/20 by the following day, and I decided if he
could do it, I could, too.
Shortly after
making the decision to have LASIK done, I got pregnant with our
first child. I had to wait until after she was born before I could
have the surgery, but at the first opportunity I started investigating
to find a good doctor. We had moved from Texas to Georgia since
my husband's surgery, so I didn't know any surgeons in the area.
My best friend happens to be an optometrist in Houston, and she
gave me a list of things to look for in a surgeon. I called several
LASIK centers in the Atlanta area, and EyeSight Laser was among
them. I was very impressed with this office, not only because
of what they had to say but because of how they said it. They
were friendly, courteous, and informative on the phone, and they
did not try to do a "sales job" on me like other laser
centers did. They simply answered my questions without pressuring
me to make an appointment. They met all of my friend's criteria,
and since I liked them on the phone I made an appointment.
EyeSight Laser does not charge anything
for the initial consultation, so I figured I couldn't lose. This
initial appointment would give them the chance to make sure I
was a candidate for LASIK, and it would give me a chance to make
sure I felt comfortable entrusting my vision to these people.
From the moment
I walked into EyeSight Laser's office, I felt welcomed. The staff
was even friendlier in person than they were on the phone, and
most importantly for me, they welcomed my baby. Since I have become
a mother I have found that many doctors' offices do not allow
children past the waiting room. This is a great problem for me,
because I do not have friends or family in Atlanta who can babysit
my daughter when I have to be somewhere. She has to come with
me, or I can't go. At EyeSight Laser, this has not been a problem
at all. In fact, not only is my daughter welcome during my office
visits, but she and her daddy got to watch me have my surgery
done. (She wasn't terribly interested, but her daddy appreciated
the opportunity to watch!)
Knowing that my
husband and daughter were nearby helped me to relax during my
LASIK procedure. I confess, the chicken in me resurfaced when
it was time for me to actually go through with this. Dr. Matzkin
and his staff did a great job of allaying my fears, and the first
half of my surgery (my right eye) went fine. A small problem came
up when they prepared to correct my left eye. It seems that prior
to my surgery I had had an allergic reaction to something and
the cornea of my left eye had some small bumps on it. Because
of this, Dr. Matzkin felt that it would be best if we did not
perform the surgery at that time. He gave me some drops (free
of charge) to help my cornea heal, and I came back a week later
to try again. The bumps were gone and Dr. Matzkin felt comfortable
performing the surgery. This time around, since I had already
been through this once, I was much more relaxed. The surgery went
well, without any complications.
One day after my
surgery, I was seeing 20/25. A big improvement from the -8.0 that
I had been! One week after LASIK, I had 20/20 vision for the first
time in over 25 years! At my 3-month check-up, my vision was 20/20
in each eye, and I was seeing better than 20/20 with both eyes
together. I have not had any complications or problems with my
vision, and I can see great at night as well as during the day
- that makes those middle-of-the-night baby checks much less of
a hassle!
Having LASIK performed
to correct my vision was a very hard decision for me. Not only
was the prospect of eye surgery scary in and of itself, but it
isn't cheap. However, when you add up 25 years' worth of glasses,
contacts, and cleaning solutions, the price tag of LASIK doesn't
seem so big. Still, I am a stay-at-home mom and finances are rather
tight in our household. We are fortunate in that my husband's
employer offers a Flexible Spending Account program, which allows
us to use pre-tax money to pay for things such as LASIK. Many
companies offer this type of benefit, and it is the perfect way
to pay for medical expenses that health insurance doesn't cover.
EyeSight
Laser's costs are very competitive, and with the help of our FSA
we were able to afford it easily and stay within our budget. Making
the decision to have Dr. Matzkin correct my vision was definitely
one of the best I've ever made. I hope my little girl doesn't
have to be one of those little bitty kids wearing glasses, but
if she does have bad vision when she gets older, I know that Dr.
Matzkin and the staff at EyeSight Laser will take great care of
her!

Never being at
a loss of words, I find it very hard to put into words just how
wonderful the gift of sight really is. Dr. Matzkin and the staff
at EyeSight Laser Center have been so wonderful throughout this
scary experience. I have spent the last three years
checking into eye correction surgery. The reservations I had were
the fear of the surgery itself and finding a doctor that I felt
comfortable with. After hearing about EyeSight Laser Center on
the radio, I was moved to call and check them out. After talking
to the great staff on the phone, I checked them out on the website
(www.eyesightatlanta.com) and then made my appointment for my
exam. I had my tests performed by some of the nicest techs and
specialists around and after much reassurance I scheduled
my surgery for the next week.
The week of
my Laser surgery the TODAY show had a live LASIK procedure performed
on the air. Well, every friend and family member I know called
me to have me watch the program I could not believe I was
going to have LASIK done that same Thursday! The day of the surgery
was nerve wracking but my fears proved to be unfounded
the surgery was a breeze. I couldnt believe it when
they told me I was done.
The next morning
when I woke up and saw the alarm clock I cried after being visually
impaired for 25 years I COULD SEE! The miracle of SIGHT!
Now one month later I cant believe how wonderful things
look and I wonder what took me so long to do it. I was waiting
for that perfect doctor, and I found him -- thank you Dr. Matzkin!!

I got the call one afternoon -- I had won
a free LASIK procedure! I knew my husband had entered our names
in the drawing since he heard the advertisement on the radio.
Like the saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually
is -- BUT NOT THIS TIME! It's better than I even imagined it would
be! Having LASIK surgery has been wonderful for me. Dr. Matzkin
has given me something I hoped I would have someday through surgery
-- clear 20/20 vision with my own eyes.
I arranged an appointment with his office
to find out if I was a candidate for the surgery. After he determined
that I was, and since I was so impressed with his office on the
first visit, I scheduled the surgery for the next week. Everyone
in the office was kind and professional and ready to answer any
of my many questions. I was actually anxious to have laser surgery
on my only pair of eyes!
The surgery itself went so well that I
could read the names on buildings across the street on the way
home! Dr. Matzkin called our home that night to make sure I was
doing well. I even took my skeptical mother and mother-in-law
to two different follow-up appointments to let them see what a
wonderful place EyeSight Laser Center is. They were both quite
impressed!
Like many of you considering LASIK, I have
worn glasses or contacts most of my life. I really don't remember
a time in my life when I could see without them. I couldn't read
the clock next to my bed. I couldn't see my children in their
beds at night without my glasses on, and I certainly couldn't
drive safely without my glasses or contacts. LASIK has given me
freedom from all that.
I highly recommend the LASIK procedure
and Dr. Matzkin and his very professional, capable staff at EyeSight
Laser Center!

My experience with Eye Sight Laser
was fantastic. I was very impressed with the facility as well
as the staff. At my one week follow-up visit my vision was 20/20.
I was so excited. There are not enough words to express my gratitude
to Dr. Matzkin, and to the staff that work for Eye Sight Laser.
Thank
You!
